Ana Sagar Lake was built in the 12th century by Anaji Chauhan, grandfather of King Prithviraj Chauhan of the Chauhan dynasty. It was built by damming the Luni River to provide water to the people of Ajmer and surrounding areas. Later, Mughal rulers, especially Jahangir and Shah Jahan, built beautiful marble baradaris and gardens around the lake, which further enhanced its beauty.
This lake has been a major venue for royal ceremonies, cultural events and social gatherings of common people and is still counted among the major attractions of Ajmer.
