Located just a few steps away from the famous Ajmer Sharif Dargah, Adhai Din Ka Jhonpra is one of the most ancient and captivating monuments of Ajmer, Rajasthan. This architectural marvel is a wonderful amalgamation of intricate motifs of Hindu and Jain artistry with Islamic calligraphy and architecture, presenting a priceless example of early Indo-Islamic design.
Its strange name – ‘Adhai Din Ka Jhonpra’ – adds to its mystique and historical significance. It is believed to have been built in just two and a half days. This mosque is a living symbol of religious and cultural fusion in the medieval period of India.
Adhai Din Ka Jhonpra was built in the 12th century as a Sanskrit college and Jain temple complex during the reign of King Vigraharaj Chauhan IV of the Chauhan dynasty. After the conquest of Ajmer by Muhammad Ghori in 1192 AD, his general Qutbuddin Aibak (later the first Sultan of Delhi) partially converted it into a mosque. Though converted into a mosque, much of its original Hindu and Jain architecture is still intact today, offering a unique glimpse into India's complex history.
The monument is a beautiful blend of Hindu, Jain and Islamic architecture. Its façade has a massive arched wall decorated with fine Arabic calligraphy. Inside it are more than 300 beautifully carved pillars, which still bear the original floral and mythological motifs of the temple. The central arch is flanked by domes and minarets, which, though now partially in ruins, still bear testimony to its grand history. Later mosque structures such as mihrabs, domes and prayer rooms were added. This ancient heritage attracts not only devotees but also historians, photographers and architecture lovers.
