Galta Ji (Monkey Temple) – A holy place in the lap of the Aravali

Galta Ji Temple, situated among the Aravali hills, about 10 km east of Jaipur, is famous for its sanctity, natural beauty and unique atmosphere. Built in the 18th century, this temple complex is surrounded by natural springs, holy pools and temples nestled in the hills. Hundreds of monkeys live here, due to which it is fondly called Monkey Temple. This place is considered to be the place of penance of Rishi Galav, and even today, it is a wonderful confluence of peace and spirituality for Hindu pilgrims and tourists.

Historical Significance

  • It is believed that Rishi Galav performed rigorous penance here, due to which the gods were pleased and blessed this place with natural water streams.
  • To make this holy place memorable, Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II's court Diwan Rao Kriparam built the temple in the 18th century.
  • Over time, the site became a major centre for Vaishnav and Hanuman devotees.

Architectural Features

  • The main temple, made of pink sandstone, exudes palace-like grandeur.
  • The complex has seven sacred ponds, of which the Galta Kund is considered the holiest and never dries up.
  • Temples of Hanuman, Shri Ram, Shri Krishna and Sun God are located here.
  • The domed pavilion, carved walls and grand entrance add to its beauty.
  • The Surya Mandir, located at a height, offers a panoramic view of Jaipur, especially at sunrise.

Why is it called the Monkey Temple?

A large number of Rhesus macaque monkeys live in the temple complex. These monkeys are considered sacred here and devotees often feed them. Their playfulness and presence make the place lively and interesting.
