Located in the heart of Jaipur, right next to the City Palace, Jantar Mantar is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the world’s most extraordinary astronomical observatories. Built in the early 18th century by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II, this marvellous site offers a unique blend of astronomy, architecture and mathematics. Jantar Mantar houses a series of massive instruments that were built to measure time, determine the position of planets and constellations and predict eclipses—in an era when modern instruments were not available.
Completed in 1734, Jantar Mantar is one of the five observatories built by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II in India. Of these, the Jantar Mantar in Jaipur is the largest and best-preserved. The name “Jantar Mantar” is derived from the Sanskrit words “yantra” (instrument) and “mantra” (aphorism). This observatory reflects Maharaja Jai Singh's deep interest in astronomy and astrology and his desire to improve the time measurement system.
The best time to visit Jantar Mantar is from October to March when the weather is pleasant. It is best to go early in the morning or in the evening as the crowd is less and the shadows are clearly visible.
