Rising majestically from the heart of the Thar Desert, Jaisalmer Fort, also known as Sonar Qila or Golden Fort, is one of the largest and most imposing forts in the world. Built of yellow sandstone, it gleams golden under the desert sun. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is a living fort, with markets, houses, temples, and restaurants active within its ancient walls.
Built in 1156 AD by Rawal Jaisal, the fort symbolized Rajput valour and served as a strategic military outpost. It was an important trading centre on the ancient Silk Route and witnessed many battles. The fort's architecture reflects Rajputana style adapted to desert life.
